24 Albums of December - BILLIE EILISH - When We All Fall Asleep Where Do We Go?
How on earth are we supposed to select 24 albums representative of Fascinating Rhythm’s 2019? Trust us that it’s an unenviable task, but we’ve given it a good ol’ go. In my opinion this year has been a vintage one for music, so in truth we’d could have picked 100 or even 200 great records all worthy of inclusion. For example, we didn’t include releases by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Lizzo, Deerhunter, Steve Gunn, The National, black midi or Sacred Paws – whose 2019 album I’m still obsessed with. So, there’s a LOT of great stuff we didn’t include, but we’ve done our best to present a span of selections from every area of the store, including some great local and wider Canadian releases. Between now and Christmas Eve, we hope you enjoy the tracks we’ve put together for you.

1. BILLIE EILISH – When We All Fall Asleep Where Do We Go?
On the back of a debut EP and full-length album that’s essentially a collection of bedroom demos concocted with her brother, Finneas, Billie Eilish has had an extraordinary year. The undisputed pop story of 2019, Billie is still only 17 (turning 18 on December 18th) and has delivered a record of irresistible R’n’B and hip hop-inflected songs with memorable, often witty lyrics, and impossibly hummable melodies. Billie’s vocal delivery is soulful and mature beyond her years, and coupled with her just-the-right-side-of-bratty attitude and image she seems to have arrived as a complete package, at least for this phase of her burgeoning career. This said, the pressure is now on to deliver a worthy sophomore album to follow the monster hit that is her debut.
