What is the Local Journalism Initiative?

From the Community Radio Fund of Canada:

The Local Journalism Initiative (LJI) supports the creation of original civic journalism that covers the diverse needs of underserved communities across Canada. Funding is available to eligible Canadian media organizations to hire journalists to produce civic journalism for underserved communities. The content produced is made available at Frequency News so that Canadians can be better informed. It is made available to Canadian media organizations through a Creative Commons license.

This program has been made possible by the Government of Canada.

For the Campus-Community sector, the initiative is managed by the Community Radio Fund of Canada (CRFC). Reporters at CHLY 101.7FM funded through the Local Journalism Initiative work with two national coordinators from the CRFC who provide editorial feedback on the stories they are working on. Internally, Jesse Woodward acts as managing editor for content produced through the LJI at CHLY providing an additional layer of editorial feedback on stories published.

The Local Journalism Initiative helps fund our Non-profit Newsroom Project. If you would like to support local journalism, support this project with a donation today.

You can find stories funded through the LJI below and in our news section.
