Be heard on CHLY 101.FM!
We invite people from our broadcast community and beyond to be part of the myriad of voices on our airwaves! We have guidelines, and script examples for each type of recording, which you can find on this page.
Note: We reserve the right to refuse bad faith submissions.
Recording your audio
If possible, using a nice pro recording setup is ideal.
Recording using your smartphone’s voice memo app is more likely. If recording your voice memo at home we recommend that you record it:
In your bedroom closet. Hanging clothing will decrease ‘room noise’ and you’ll get a better recording. You can also get the same effect under a heavy blanket!
Hold your smartphone’s microphone (usually found next to the speaker at the bottom of your phone) about six inches from your mouth at a 45° angle. This will help to avoid plosives (ie popping Ps) into the microphone of your phone.
Listen to your recording on a pair of headphones to make sure it sounds pretty good, with no distortion or plosives.
🗣️ Listener Appeals—Used during our fund drives, listeners can tell our audience why they listen to, and/or support CHLY 101.7FM. Maybe it's the eclectic mix of music, maybe it's our diverse talk programming, maybe it's something else! We want to hear from you! Find our guidelines and upload form for Listener Appeals here→
🗣️ Legal Station IDs—Legal Station Identification (IDs) are played at the top of the hour and tell our listeners what station they are listening to! An example of which is “Hello this is Jean from Gabriola and you are listening to CHLY 101.7FM in Nanaimo”. Anybody can record a Legal Station ID! Find our guidelines and upload form for Legal Station IDs here →
🗣️ Program Bumpers—Program Bumpers tell the listener what specific program they are listening to, sometimes with a specific ask. Programs like the VIU Meter, Cheese and Crackers Show, Locals Only, Kinetic Flow, etc. Learn more here about Bumpers and how to record one at home →
🗣️ Record a Program Promo—Every program on CHLY needs to be promoted! Learn more here about Promos and how to record one at home →
