Before you fill in a POP
Before you submit a Program Outline Proposal (POP), we need to check a few things off our list…
First things first
The following applies to local volunteers and program proposals.
Are you a Member?*
Vancouver Island University Students enrolled at the Nanaimo Campus for the current or previous semester are considered Student Members and are not required to pay the Community Member fee. Students enrolled at other VIU satellite campuses do not pay fees to the Radio Malaspina Society and are required to pay a Community Membership fee in order to participate.
Non-students must become Community Members and pay our yearly Community Membership fee. Membership runs from May 1st to April 30th of the following year.
Paying this fee does not guarantee airtime at CHLY.
Did you fill in the Volunteer Application?*
You must do this first. Show proposals will only be reviewed if you are approved as a volunteer.
The Executive Director reviews all Volunteer Applications.
Proceed only if you are a Member and have submitted a Volunteer Application.
Syndicated Program Proposals
If you are a host/producer of a syndicated program (broadcast on other stations), you can proceed in filling in the form. Our station does not accept Program Outline Proposals on behalf of other media organizations, submitted through third parties.
Review
Station management (Currently the Executive Director and Program Coordinator) review all Program Outline Proposals (POPs). We try our best to get back to all applicants promptly, but staff time is always at a premium. To improve your chances of having your program approved, the following is highly recommended for all applicants.
Volunteer some off-air time in the station office so that staff can get to know you. Become a Music Librarian.
Have at least one co-host, if not a team behind your show; eg: Hosts, researchers, producers, interviewers, etc.
Sit in on the VIU Meter or other program for on-air training. Get a feel for what it's like to be in the booth while on air!
Attend a training session.
If your POP is approved, you will be required to attend training sessions that pertain to your program format. You will be required to sign a Program Agreement that commits you to follow your POP and not significantly deviate from it without the permission of staff.
Significant deviation from your POP and Program Agreement without permission of staff may result in program suspension and eventual program termination.
Program Renewals
Every year around April as part of renewal season, Producers and their teams (hosts, co-hosts, associate producers, etc) are required to submit an updated POP. This ensures that staff have up-to-date info about your program and if necessary, an opportunity to give helpful constructive feedback and training.
This also allows you to propose changes to the overall format of your program or to propose a new program entirely. It is very rare for a program NOT to be renewed, so don’t fear the renewal process.
