Board Nominations 2024
Nominations are now open for those seeking to join the Board of Directors of the Radio Malaspina Society, the organization that operates CHLY 101.7FM, Nanaimo’s non-profit campus-community radio station.
Board nominations are open until Friday, October 18th.
The board consists of ten directors, with four seats reserved for Student Members, four seats reserved for Community Members, and two seats reserved for faculty or administrative representatives from Vancouver Island University. Terms are two years, and directors are elected at large, with elected directors choosing amongst themselves who will take on officer responsibilities like that of board president, vice president, secretary or treasurer.
Election to the board is staggered, with two new Student Members, and two new Community members elected each year to serve their terms. This year, one VIU Representative will be elected to the board as well.
The current sitting directors are:
Janel Jezierski (Community Member, re-elected 2023)
Jay Mcdonnell (Student Member, elected 2023)
Camille James (Student Member, re-elected 2022)
Bryan Gibbons (Community Member, elected 2022)
Robin Davies (VIU Representative, re-elected 2023)
Jesse Scott Bradley (Student Member, elected 2022)
Savanna Lawless (Student Member, elected 2022)
Frequently Asked Questions
Who’s eligible?
Only Voting Members are eligible to run for the board.
Student Members currently enrolled for the fall semester are eligible to run for the board, as are those who were students during the intersession;
Community Members who have been members for at least 30 days before the AGM (tentatively September 29, 2024). Memberships can be renewed here.
Who can nominate me?
Nominations must come from a Voting Member, be they a student member or a community member. Nominators will need to provide you with the email attached to their membership, and if they are a Student Member, their student number from Vancouver Island University.
How much of a time commitment is the board?
Directors generally meet bi-monthly, with some meetings in the months in between for those assigned to committees. Board and committee meetings run 1.5 to 2.5 hours per meeting. Directors are also expected to sit on at least a few committees. Per month, expect to spend about 4 hours on tasks relating to your role as a director.
What kind of experience do I need?
For Student Members, no experience is necessary, though a desire to learn the role and take it seriously is a must.
For Community Members, we seek experience in the areas of legal, accounting, and strategic planning among other types of experience (see form).
Training will be provided for new directors.
Why are there different types of members involved on our board?
Our campus-community licence, requires that campus-subtype stations like CHLY 101.7FM involve stakeholders from not only the community we broadcast to, but also stakeholders associated with the campus like students, faculty, staff or administration.
Do I need to be Canadian?
Not necessarily! Per our licencing, 80% of our board must be defined as “Canadian” by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC). So long as you are a citizen by birth or naturalization, or a permanent resident not yet eligible for naturalization, you count as a “Canadian” in the eyes of the CRTC.
Due to this, small numbers of international students may sit on the board, so long as the board is at a full ten members.
When is the AGM?
Our AGM typically lands on the last Tuesday of October. This year, that is October 29th, 2024.
Does the society have directors’ insurance?
Yes we do!
