Why Indie Media is Important
Hey there, this is Robin from Media Studies at VIU.
One of the things I like the most about our campus-community radio station, and independent media in general, is the open-access approach.
Anyone who wants to come and engage in a meaningful way at the station is encouraged to do so. Vancouver Island University works this way as well. It doesn't matter what your past experience is, or what training you have, open access means you can come on over, learn the ropes, tell your own story, and be part of a community which truly cares about its members and its future.
As an educator, it gives me great pleasure to look broadly at CHLY activities, and see so many current and former students involved—as volunteers and staff—doing work which is engaging and rewarding.
The practical collaboration my classes have with CHLY means students can explore the technical and creative possibilities of making media, and then witness its power when they hear their work on the radio. In addition, there are strong opportunities for training and networking, and honestly, schoolwork becomes more fun and meaningful.
CHLY is listener-supported and has a non-profit status. To maintain open access, and to remain free of control by any commercial or capitalist interest like so much of the media which hits the world, CHLY needs your support.
Please consider making a financial contribution to CHLY. Visit chly.ca/donate, or call 250.716.3410 (between the hours of 9 AM to 7 PM Monday to Friday) to make a donation over the phone.
Thanks for listening.
