A decisive win in referendum results!
After several weeks of campaigning for support, students at Vancouver Island University's Nanaimo Campus have voted decisively in favour of a proposed fee increase for CHLY 101.7FM!
During the referendum held on October 8th, 9th, and 10th, 2024, of those who turned out, an impressive 79.55% of students cast their votes in favour of the increase. The results were officially ratified by the VIUSU executive on October 29th, 2024, and shared at the Radio Malaspina Society’s Annual General Meeting later that day.
This three-year phased fee increase will significantly boost funding for the Radio Malaspina Society (which operates CHLY 101.7FM), tripling the current student contributions from approximately $60,000 to $180,000 annually. The additional funds will greatly enhance the station's capacity and stability, enabling it to better serve the campus and broader community. The station is otherwise supported by its listeners via community memberships and donations, grant funding, as well as local sponsors and advertisers.
With this increased budget, our non-profit station will be able to offer more high-quality student jobs and paid internships, creating valuable hands-on learning opportunities for VIU students.
With the win, VIUSU will update the administration at Vancouver Island University regarding the fee increase. An increase in funding is expected for Summer 2025.
A hearty thank you to everyone who voted—your support will help CHLY thrive for years to come!
