CHLY 101.7FM hires full-time local news reporter
Sweetman comes with a wealth of experience in independent media
CHLY 101.7FM is pleased to welcome back Mick Sweetman as our local news reporter. He brings over a decade of experience in journalism and will be focusing on providing timely local news to our listeners.
Mick was previously CHLY's Assistant News Director and served on the Radio Malaspina Society's board as student director. He is a Digital Media Studies and History student at Vancouver Island University.
His experience includes radio reporting in Toronto, coordinating the student newspaper program at George Brown College, reporting and audience engagement at rabble.ca, producing podcasts for Vancouver Island University, and working as the western editor for Politics Today covering the Alberta and BC legislatures.
When Mick had the chance to focus on local news at CHLY 101.7FM he didn't hesitate.
“Local news is so important for building an informed citizenry,” said CHLY's reporter Mick Sweetman. "I'm looking forward to covering the stories that matter to our listeners in the under-served communities in our broadcast area."
To that end, Mick is working on the creation of CHLY's news show, while mentoring volunteers who are interested in producing news and current affairs.
“I want to create a local news department where anyone can learn how to be a radio journalist and cover the stories in our communities and neighbourhoods that aren't being told,” he said.
We will keep you posted on CHLY's growing news coverage in future newsletters. If you are interested in volunteering your time to be part of this project, please fill in a volunteer application and contact Mick via email mick.sweetman@chly.ca to learn more about our Local Journalism Initiative project.
This position is funded by the Local Journalism Initiative, administered by the Community Radio Fund of Canada / Fonds canadien de la radio communautaire in the Campus-Community Radio sector.
