DESCRIPTION:

CHLY 101.7 FM is the broadcasting voice of Nanaimo and Vancouver Island University students. Beginning as a student club in 1994, and gaining not-for-profit status in 1997 as the Radio Malaspina Society, CHLY was approved for a broadcast license by the CRTC in 2001.

CHLY is currently a community based, campus-community radio station, with a small staff and over 60+ volunteers made up of Community Members and Student members from VIU’s Nanaimo Campus. CHLY offers alternative coverage of every genre and perspective, with a mandate to support niche programming, local and Canadian artists and underrepresented voices. Each week, locally produced and syndicated programs are broadcast on CHLY 101.7fm in four different languages, with live streaming and podcasts available at chly.ca.

TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Sales Coordinator is a contract employee position at CHLY 101.7FM. They work to sell advertising and create sponsorship opportunities on CHLY 101.7FM with community organizations, venues, and businesses in our broadcast community. They report to the Executive Director and work with the Program Coordinator and other audio editing staff and volunteers to ensure that the advertisements and sponsorships they sell are written, recorded and trafficked as detailed in invoices and broadcast orders.

The Sales Coordinator will work alongside a small team in a non-profit broadcasting environment to:

  1. Sell advertising and sponsorships to provide income for the station, while following station sales policies;

  2. Create estimates for clients to help them make purchases decisions;

  3. Invoice clients and followup on unpaid invoices;

  4. Write broadcast orders detailing ad/sponsorship length, total impressions required timeslot and other client requirements;

  5. Write advertising, sponsorship, and PSA copy;

  6. Maintain positive business relationships to ensure future sales, IE: checking in with current and past customers;

  7. Work to meet monthly and annual sales targets;

  8. Help to build and maintain a “Friends of CHLY” membership incentives card program;

  9. Present, promote and sell products/services using solid arguments to existing and prospective customers;

  10. Perform cost-benefit and needs analysis of existing/potential customers to meet their needs;

  11. Establish, develop and maintain positive business and customer relationships;

  12. Reach out to customer leads through cold calling;

  13. Expedite the resolution of customer problems and complaints to maximize satisfaction;

  14. Achieve agreed upon sales targets and outcomes within schedule;

  15. Coordinate sales effort with team members and other departments;

  16. Analyze the territory/market’s potential, track sales, and status reports;

  17. Supply station management with reports on customer needs, problems, interests, competitive activities, and potential for new products and services;

  18. Keep abreast of best practices and promotional trends;

  19. Follow station policy in regards to advertising and sponsorships;

  20. With approval by the Executive Director, develop in-kind trade arrangements with businesses IE: Festival Tickets for advertising;

  21. Continuously improve through feedback;

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:

The ideal candidate will be motivated, goal-orientated, and organized. Experience and involvement with community organizations, the business community, and even the local music scene is an asset. The successful candidate will ideally have proven experience in selling advertising and sponsorships, but a solid background in general sales will be acceptable.

The applicant ideally will:

  • Be passionate about or have experience with campus-community, commercial or public radio;

  • Have knowledge and broad interest in broadcasting and podcasting sales and sponsorship trends.

  • Demonstrate professional oral, written, digital, and interpersonal communication skills;

  • Have excellent organizational and time-management skills;

  • Have experience in working with and leading others. Management skills are a bonus;

  • Experience in writing estimates and invoicing clients;

  • Have a current Class 7 (N) or Class 5 BC driver's license (or provincial equivalent) and vehicle to make sales trips where necessary.

OTHER DETAILS / MENTORING:

  • Will report to the Executive Director.

  • Will work with the Program Coordinator and production team to ensure advertisements and sponsorships are recorded and trafficked.

  • Will work with and receive support from the Bookkeeper to ensure that invoices are paid.

Compensation: 30% Sales Commission for advertisements/sponsorships sold, based on the monies actually received from customers for advertising/sponsorship services during the current pay period. Potential for yearly bonus based on hitting revenue goal. This revenue goal will be prorated as this position is starting in the middle of the financial year.
