Afternoon News Update for May 6 2020

NANAIMO—The Premier is about to speak about how the province will move into the next phase of its COVID-19 pandemic. John Horgan is expected to announce new guidelines to allow people to expand their social circles, while still practising safe physical distancing. BC's Provincial Health Officer has hinted there could be allowances for sports teams and the reopening of barbershops and hairstylists. We'll bring you the details on our next news update at 6 o'clock tonight.

There was a sombre ceremony today on the airfield at Canadian Forces Base Trenton. The remains of six members of the military who died in a helicopter crash off the coast of Greece last week were repatriated. One of those killed was 30 year old Kevin Hagan, who was born in Nanaimo and spent time in Ladysmith and Victoria. Today, the Prime Minister, Minister of Defense and Chief of Defense staff, along with dozens of military colleagues and family members donned black surgical masks to witness the ceremony. There is no word yet on the cause of the crash, that happened as the helicopter was returning to its sister ship HMCS Fredericton, during NATO training exercises.

Do you have something you'd like to say about how your private information is used? The province is reviewing its Personal Information Protection Act and it's calling for submissions. The Act governs how private-sector organizations collect, protect, use and disclose personal information. And, it gives individuals the right to access their own personal information. The chair of the all-party committee doing the review Rachna Singh says "Our increased reliance on technology has increased with the COVID-19 pandemic which makes it an especially appropriate time to review this legislation." You can participate by registering to speak at a public hearing in June, or you can submit a written, audio or video submission. To take part in the hearing, you must register before May the 29th. Other submissions will be accepted until August 14th. The special committee will make recommendations to the legislative assembly in a report expected next February. For more information, go to the bc legislative assembly website www.leg.bc.ca/cmt/pipa.
