Open: We're hiring TWO Junior Reporters for Summer 2022

Important note:

This job is funded through a Canada Summer Job (CSJ) Grant. To be eligible, youth must:

  1. be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment*

  2. be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment**; and,

  3. have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations

*The youth must be 15 years of age at the beginning of the employment period. The youth may be more than 30 years of age at the end of the employment period as long as the youth was 30 at the beginning of the employment period.

**International students are not eligible participants. International students include anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada. Youth awaiting a refugee status ruling, as well as those who hold a temporary visitor visa, youth visa or work visa are ineligible. As the objective of the Canada Summer Jobs program is to support youth entering the Canadian labour market, the temporary nature of an international student's time in Canada does not allow for a long-term connection to the labour market.

Job description

As Junior Reporter at CHLY, you will be working within a broadcast facility that provides a community service to its listeners. You will primarily work within the News Department to relaunch Mid Coast Morning, CHLY’s news and current affairs program. To a smaller degree, you will assist the Summer Radio Camp Coordinator with CHLY’s second Summer Radio Camp for youths by teaching basic news reporting skills.

Qualifications & Requirements

The applicant is ideally:

  • Pursuing an education in broadcasting, journalism, media studies, business, a related field, or has displayed a previous keen interest in CHLY 101.7FM;

  • Passionate about and/or has experience with campus-community or public radio; audio production skills (hardware and software);

  • Professional oral, written, digital, and interpersonal communication skills;

  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills.

Tasks & Responsibilities

The applicant will work with a small team (sometimes remotely) in a non-profit broadcasting environment to:

  • Work with the News Department in research, production, and hosting of Mid Coast Morning, morning news and current affairs program.

  • Report on stories in Nanaimo, and the Salish Sea area for articles on our website and broadcast online

  • Write and record public service announcements (PSAs) for local music, arts, and cultural events in the community, as well as create and update PSAs to promote the station’s shows, programs, and activities;

  • Assist in day-to-day activities of the station: answering phones, emails, assisting volunteers, etc;

  • Assist in updates to the website, eg: events calendar, show pages, etc;

  • Assist staff with social media to promote the station’s shows, programs, and activities. EG: posting the CHLY Song of the Day from the !earshot Top 50 Charts;

  • Assist in tabling at events in the community to promote the station;

  • Assist the Station Assistant/Summer Camp Coordinator in the execution and planning of the 2022 Summer Radio Daycamp;

  • Assist where needed the Junior Producers in the supervision of the Summer Radio Camp participants;

  • Assist in and/or take a leadership role in editing the content produced by the Summer Radio Camp participants.

Other Details / Mentoring

  • Will report to the Executive Director (ED) of CHLY and receive mentoring and direction from them and other staff;

  • Staff and station volunteers will provide on-site, hands-on training on station equipment.

Compensation: The rate of pay is $16.50/hr at 30 hours per week, with 240 hours total for the contract over 8 weeks.
