Here’s an article done on “Road Poets” last year.

What do you do when you live in a province with winter temperatures of minus six or seven degrees? You pine for warmer climates. One year when musician Dave Teichroeb found the winter a bit frosty he jumped in the car and headed south…to Austin, Texas. Once there he discovered Americana, a blend of folk, blues, country and rock.

Teichroeb is an accomplished musician by his own right with five cds under his name and another handful of albums from a couple of bands that he played with. In addition to touring extensively around southern Ontario, he has also toured Germany twice. His connection to community radio began in Ontario where he was often a guest on other people’s shows. He also ran an acclaimed, independent record label, called DROG, for ten years that released over seventy CD’s by independent, Ontario artists. As president of DROG (Dave’s Records of Guelph) he wore many hats including radio promotions, recording, tour manager, merchandise and manufacturing and occasionally booking agent.

In 2007 he moved 3000 miles to make Nanaimo his home, but after 2 years decided that Gabriola Island was a better fit. He was initially drawn to CHLY by the sheer quality of programming. He noted that many programmers were more mature and had experienced a lot of life, ‘you can hear it’. In the fall of 2007 Road Poets was born and Teichroeb continues to cross the water every Tuesday evening to present a mix of rock, blues, country and folk. Motivated to give air time to a genre that doesn’t get played much in Canada, his Americana show is now approaching its fourth year on the fm air waves and one year being pod casted.

Each weekly show features the best contemporary folk and Americana from around the world and Occasionally Teichroeb will interview musicians who are from the west coast or touring through. He often chooses a theme for each show, some more obvious than others. One week he celebrated Bob Dylan’s 70th birthday, other weeks he will focus on songs by women, songs about war, rain or going home. Speaking of going home, remember that road trip to Texas? Well, Teichroeb met and married a Texan and now gets to return to the home of Americana every couple of years to visit with family.

Not sure if Americana is for you? The best way to learn what defines Americana music is to listen to it. The Rough Guide to Americana, compiled by Sylvie Simmons, describes this genre as, “a convenient umbrella term adopted by, or imposed upon, a disparate group of performers . . . who mostly operate either on the margins or entirely outside of the mainstream music business, and who all draw, in their own different ways and to different degrees, on American country music as an inspiration”.

Listeners of CHLY, Nanaimo’s only independent radio station, will appreciate the appropriateness of this musical genre.  And hey, you get to listen to Teichroeb as well, and his gentle, melodic voice is pretty easy on the ears.

Tune in to 101.7fm and listen to Road Poets every Tuesday evening from 6:00-8:00pm.
