Every Thursday from 12 – 2PM, CHLY and the DNBIA bring you live music at the top of the China Steps in downtown Nanaimo

THE MARTYS are Marty Steele on keys, Marty Howe on flute and jazz chromatic harmonica, with James (Smarty) McRae on drums. The Martys play red hot, blue cool, funky, swinging jazz, in a way that will WoW you, move you, tease you, and please you.

The incredibly talented Marty Steele is a master at his craft. Perfect pitch coupled with creativity, hearing Marty jump from Standards, Bebop, Fusion, to Blues, is a thing to behold. Marty is the “Piano Man” who, like the great jazz organists of old, plays the bass lines at the same time as he plays the piano.

Marty Howe plays jazz harmonica and flute. While the diatonic harmonica is a familiar sound in blues and pop, the jazz chromatic harmonica is a rare bird indeed. Marty Howe’s playing will convince you that the chromatic harmonica is a beautifully expressive jazz instrument. Marty also doubles on flute with stylings of Jethro Tull and Herbie Mann.

On drums is James (Smarty) McRae who is well known on the Nanaimo jazz scene as a superb rhythm master.

The Band Cooks!

The band’s repertoire spans jazz standards, bossa nova’s and ventures into hot Latin Jazz, where the flute traditionally has a prominent voice and natural playground. The band is made up of well seasoned players, and it shows. This is a new collaboration, and they lay down such a wonderful groove, you just may want to get up and dance on the table!

Come on and enjoy a fun, entertaining, musical, memorable evening with your date, family, or friends!
