** What is the Homelessness Marathon?

Every year, the Homeless Marathon serves up 14 hours of people-powered radio, broadcasted on nearly 40 radio stations across Canada. With the goal of being a consciousness-raising
event, the Marathon will provide an opportunity for homeless people and their allies to take to the airwaves, and allow a nationwide discussion on homelessness issues and possible solutions.

Some highlights for this year include:

** Segments of the marathon also being hosted live from the streets of Halifax by CKDU radio, and the streets of Vancouver by CJSF radio!

In a Muslim village near Bethlehem affected by Israeli occupation, Jihan Nassar, a Christian Palestinian, runs a women’s centre with international help. In Tel Aviv, Rona Moran is one of three feminist researchers behind the website whoprofits.org – providing activists with information about international companies that make money off the occupation. Melinda Tuhus, a US radio journalist, conducts the interviews.

2012 Homelessness Marathon – February 22-23

CKUT (Montreal) and CHLY (Nanaimo)

Every year, the Homeless Marathon serves up 14 hours of people-powered radio, broadcasted on nearly 40 radio stations across Canada. With the goal of being a consciousness-raising event, the Marathon will provide an opportunity for homeless people and their allies to take to the airwaves, and allow a nationwide discussion on homelessness issues and possible solutions.


Science and Technology Lecture Series is held at VIU every Wednesday evening from 7-8 PM. This series is held in building 356 room 109 which is located at the top of the hill from the 4th street entrance. Come and listen to these free lectures given by internationally acclaimed scientists and then join us for juice and cookies afterwords.


We’re Back at 2000 WATTS!!!!!

After 2 years of operating at less than 2000 watts, we are pleased to announce we are back at full power!! Thanks to all the members (including VIU Nanaimo Campus Students), donors, sponsors over the last 2 years. With your help Radio Malaspina has purchased a new 350 Watt back up transmitter and has repaired its main 2000 Watt transmitter.

Local filmmakers have until Feb. 1 to enter this year’s VISFF, which is celebrating its seventh anniversary bringing filmmakers and filmgoers together. The VISFF is an annual event that continues to be the only short film festival on Vancouver Island that focuses on local talent…..

Nanaimo Event: JUNGIAN DREAM INTERPRETATION: February 4

The aim of this evening’s lecture is to learn how to interpret dreams using Carl Jung’s Analytical Psychology. We will start with an overview of Carl Jung’s ideas, then work through a Jungian approach to dream interpretation. C.G. Jung viewed the dream as offering a snapshot of our mental condition as it is now. This means that the dream tells us vital information about how we are living our life, and alerts us to areas that we are neglecting or misunderstanding.

Pink Ribbons, Inc. looks at the pervasive impact of breast cancer fundraising. Where does all the money go, and what is actually achieved? The film offers a completely different take on the pink ribbon “success” story that has overtaken North America.

Tommy Roden initially began his community radio career as the Sound Engineer for Gord Theedom, a fellow octogenarian programmer at CHLY radio. After helping Theedom to record his weekly program onto CD, he was hounded for about a year by both Theedom and the station manager before he finally capitulated and agreed to do his own show. What’s Next began in May of 2010 and continues to surprise listeners each week…..
