Not that much marked new this week, so I didn’t report the charts this week. But here is what was played, ignore the rankings, except for the first four they were all tied and are in alphabetical order.

Local Curtis C takes the # 1 spot this week, followed closely by JGarrett (local-ish Vancouver) and Chris Potter. I’m sure Chris lives in a nice place too but I don’t have that info at the moment. :-)

A good percentage of the top 10 are bands that played live in the studio during the reporting period. No surprise there. Most were not in the earshot database…they are now :-) Hopefully our chart support starts some national buzz.

Sorry for not posting last week’s chart. It is now up in the chart archive (click the button that says charts on the right side of this page) but it was never on the front page as it should have been.
This week the other Ide No More compilation Vol.2 takes the #1 spot, followed by Frightened Rabbit and Theo Massop’s new project Boodaboom. Could not figure out if we have a pre-release version or if it is actually released. Let’s just call it “available very soon”, I mean now is very soon right, so I’m covered :-)

Hibernation – The Fallen Sound by interchill
From http://soundcloud.com/interchill/hibernation-the-fallen-sound:

One of the more having it tunes from Seb Taylor’s new Hibernation album Second Nature, out on Interchill November 13.

Hibernation is Seb Taylor’s electronic downtempo project. With a distinct sonic palette that includes stand up bass, muted trumpet, brush drums, glitches, womps and warm subs the Hibernation sound is crucial listening. Seb brings a lifetime of musical experience to his production, composition and arrangements, and it shows. Listening to Hibernation conjures up future memories of dark smoky jazz clubs, Bladerunner cityscapes, parallel universes, dreams half forgotten and epic nights. This is music with spirit, narrative and detail.

[Editor's note: interchill is a label based on Salt Spring Island, BC. interchill's website is: http://interchill.com/. PS-Not at all a music video, but you get the point.]

Shh, Rez Pirate Radio is now on CHLY.ca on Saturdays @noon! Hey! they’re letting me back in Come and check out Aboriginal music, news, & culture. The first half hour is news and culture, and the 2nd half hour is music…

Altered Egos is a news show that has been broadcast on CHLY radio for many years. Bob Hansen, the current host, has been manning the mike for the last 2 years. In order to produce the two hour show Hansen spends about twenty hours a week pulling clips from a handful of related websites. He readily credits Redeye Coop radio in Vancouver, Kapput radio in Australia, Kootenay Coop Radio and Rabble.ca for their cutting edge material. Technology aside, Hansen is buoyed by dozens of real-life activists that populate the Gulf Islands. Clearly there is no shortage of material or inspiration.

Hansen is passionate about the importance of independent media and believes that commercial media has failed us. He quotes Barbara Frum, “tell us something that we don’t know about something that we are interested in.” Hansen has put her words to work and informs his audience about the native perspective on the Enbridge Bi-Directional Pipeline project, skyrocketing hydro rates, water extraction and senior’s health care.

In conversation his interests become apparent by the increasing volume of his voice as he speaks about trade agreements, energy consumption, patents, health care and unions. Not one to back away from conflict, Hansen spent over 20 years in the field of biomedical engineering, working for both the Vancouver and Nanaimo General Hospitals. Too often, he believes, people shut themselves down. He, on the other hand, is more inclined to try to be shut down. He willingly pushes the envelope and would like to see Altered Egos get even closer to the edge.

Hansen believes that people lack information and if they knew the truth, would take action and create change; change that would better ourselves, our community and the planet. He was the chair of the local chapter of the Council of Canadians and strongly influenced by his father, who worked for the CBC.

If Hansen wasn’t dedicating his personal energy to the show, he would be editing his book, writing a second book, or creating a film documentary. The medium would change but the message would remain: get informed, know the truth and act accordingly. He wants to fix the current system, find ways to live sustainably and allow citizens to make an honest living.

As stated on Redeye’s website, the only way to have an independent, accessible and democratic media is for the people to own the media themselves. In keeping with that belief, Hansen would like to expand on the news platform and encourage others to participate via submitting audio clips or conducting interviews. If you want to be a part of this revolution, get in touch with CHLY. But a word of caution: participation could lead to big changes.

In an ideal world independent media would be funded properly. Until that time, you can listen to the truth every Saturday morning from 10:00am to 12:00pm on 101.7fm.

Alison Roberts discovered community radio in the fall of 2004, thanks to the seek button on her stereo. Since finding 101.7 fm, she has been educated, entertained and ultimately hooked by the authenticity, variety and passion of independent media.

Watch Now!

Download Track: http://bit.ly/tf-vengeance

Amon Tobin presents the next brutalist masterpiece wired up under his Two Fingers guise, “Vengeance Rhythm.” A low-slung exercise in violence, brooding power and pure production smarts, in the words of a recent Resident Advisor feature, it’s “a little like dubstep built on an interplanetary scale.” The tune has been brought to life (and death) in a truly jaw-dropping video from stop-frame animator and director Chris Ullens. Ullens transforms a pile of toys, a love of super slo-mo explosions and a huge pile of mince into the funniest, most eye-popping and shocking exercise in animated ultra-violence since Walt Disney discovered Mickey and Donald were engaged in Un-American Activities together.

“Chill out”

Bliss Rider Jennifer Paige has been involved with CHLY since 2002. She recalls another student at Vancouver Island University stating that she could have her own show on the campus community radio station. Skeptical but intrigued, Paige and another student followed through and began a metal show that lasted almost 3 years. She progressed to [...]

Tommy Roden initially began his community radio career as the Sound Engineer for Gord Theedom, a fellow octogenarian programmer at CHLY radio. After helping Theedom to record his weekly program onto CD, he was hounded for about a year by both Theedom and the station manager before he finally capitulated and agreed to do his own show. What’s Next began in May of 2010 and continues to surprise listeners each week…..

Boy am I happy I only have to do this once a year. This is a relatively “unbuffered” listing, normally we limit the number of plays we count in one show (prevents a complete CD play from dominating the charts).
Stats:
total songs played in the year: 30,000
total plays of new releases: 1800, (961 Cancon, 847 other)
Most played new CD was played 51 times this year.
